Dickens Day

by Dustin Allen
Concordia Lions Club- Dickens Day
At exactly 3 p.m. on the sixth of February, a twenty-four hour read-a-thon of the works of Charles Dickens began; a tribute to celebrate the life and works of the master of prose to ring in what would have been his two-hundredth birthday. This event was streamed live using U-Stream on www.dickensday.ca and, using social media, caught the attention of hundreds of viewers, including Canadian literary giant Margaret Atwood, who re-tweeted the link to the stream to her 300,000 twitter followers. This specific re-tweet was pitched and planned by Concordia Lions Club President Jacob Bos as the club recruited students, faculty, and administrative employees to join the cause and devote fifteen minutes of their day to read a passage of a Dickens novel.
The recruitment process was challenging and required an aggressive approach, as the idea was often initially met with skepticism, but with the enthusiasm and vision of "artful dodger" (as described by Edmonton Journal writer Paula Simons) Jacob Bos' over one-hundred people volunteered their time. On February seventh at 4 a.m. close to twenty students still remained and more were on the way, bringing fresh faces, voices, and coffee. At 3 p.m. after twenty-four continuous hours of Dickens including the entire Tale of Two Cities novel, a celebration commenced in the schools library, as hundreds of students, faculty members, and local news reporters gathered and spoke of the events success: giving due credit to the Lions Club for their efforts.
Teaming up with the Make Your Mark foundation, led by the Concordia Alumni Association, an amount of nearly two thousand dollars was raised for Concordia scholarships during the event, and donations are still periodically coming in now, as the site is still active.
Our Lions Club here at Concordia is small, but has already proven to be creative, productive, and effective. Because of the huge student involvement, the money raised, the complete lack of money spent, and the scale of the event, we at the Concordia Lions Club safely consider Dickens Day 2012 a success. Whether it was recording promotional videos starring students, communicating with legends of Canadian literature, or connecting with local journalists (who eventually devoted an entire page spread to our event), social media proved instrumental in every step of our budget-less conquest.
The greatest lesson learned from the Dickens Day experiment is that a few good men, a camera, and the power of social media is all that's needed to defeat apathetic mentalities, get people involved, promote culture, and create community.

Random thought

just a short post, completely random and stupid, but is it true if you hang out with someone enough you will sound like them. Because that is true for accents, say I was to move to Australia for a year or whatever; I would end up coming home with an accent. Anyways I'm posting this cause I saw a Macy's commercial for Black Friday with Justin Bieber in it and he sounds really deep voiced, and well frankly like he's black. Maybe he was just trying to cover-up his puberty voice for the camera I dunno, just thought I'd say. I don't mind his new hair either.

oh and here is what we look like!

"For the secret of man is not to live but to have something to live for. Without a stable conception of the object of life, man would not consent to go on living, and would rather destroy himself than remain on earth, though he had an abundance of bread."

- Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

Just a thought

What is fear?

Fear is ice.
Freezing every vein, artery, muscle
Turning life inanimate
to that of a statue.

We have been blessed with amazing technological progress - the spread of ideas, thoughts, values, has been made incredibly easy by the development of international post, television, radio and, even more so, Internet. Through social networking sites, business sites, etc, we have the full capability to express ourselves and influence humankind near and far.

So how come our relationships are taking a hit? Should we not be making progress in outreach with all these new-fangled tools at our fingertips?

The answer is fear. We are afraid to expose ourselves, to admit to the public that we, as individuals and collectives, have entirely different opinions on how to run things than our authorities, our parents, our educators. We are afraid to connect with each other. We are afraid to commit to change, to progress with knowledge.

If I know something is morally incorrect and have the ability to influence the reverse of what is taking place - who am I to ignore that which is corrupt? What kind of human being knows the suffering of others, watches the suffering of others, and does nothing? We have the capability to make a stand, to incorporate the knowledge we have gained and the resources placed before us to encourage a stronger standing community - local and global.

Change can be made so simple just be taking advantage of technology. We know what is wrong, so let's shout it out! Let's spread awareness, but not only that, let's take assertive action!

 - Yet fear holds us back. Crippling, confining fear.
How do we disable the dis-abler?

The renown "just do it" tactic is a must. We need to take risks to take a stand. Once we shove fear aside, we can reach out to our brethren. Then love, Perfect Love, God's Love, is free to work in our lives. His Love is so necessary to defeat fear. Only through God - God through us - can we find the root of terror, sever it, and jump-start society to get in gear and match the progress of technology.

But first, take the risk.

I am.

- Elysia M.

"Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends"
